The Art

Iaido is a traditional Japanese martial art which focuses on individual, situational forms using the japanese sword.

Through repeated practice of these forms, or kata, practitioners perfect the technique of drawing, cutting, and re-sheathing the japanese sword.

Our Practices

Iaido is offered on Tuesday evenings and Sunday Mornings at our Addison Location.

Iaido at DFWKIK typically consists of Kihon, Kata practice, and free practice (jikeiko).

During Kihon we practice our fundamental movements, such as footwork and swinging drills to reinforce muscle memory for kata.

During kata practice, we perform the kata and receive feedback or focused instruction to improve our performance. Newer students will have more dedicated attention to learn fundamentals or new kata.

During Jikeiko, each student is free to practice individually, with another student, or ask sensei for instruction.

Start Your Journey

If you are interested in starting Iaido, we encourage you to come visit our Addison Location and observe a practice to see if you like it!

You can also Contact Us if you have any questions.

If you decide to sign up, on your first day you will just need to wear exercise clothes with long pants (such as sweatpants) and sports knee pads (such as volleyball) - Iaido practice involves frequent kneeling, and we practice in a gymnasium. We will have spare equipment for your first practice you can borrow, after which we recommend purchasing your own bokuto for regular practice!
